At 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Colorado Springs Police Department will ceremoniously bid adieu to its Air Support Unit at the hangar located at 950 Aviation Way.
Chief Richard Myers will give a speech to mark the end of the helicopter unit.
Although regular flight operations have ceased, the city said in a press release there may be some “ride-along” opportunities for media members in the days following decommissioning, weather permitting.
The unit started up in 1996 and have logged 13,004 flight hours, 1,438 felony arrests, 314 missing person searches and 1,441 patrol officer welfare checks.
The unit is being eliminated due to budget constraints.
