Ed Jones, the former Republican state senator and county commissioner, has sent out word that he's making an announcement Monday, apparently confirming his plans to run for the commissioner District 5 seat being vacated by term-limited Jim Bensberg.
Jones has been off the political stage since losing his Senate seat in 2006 to Democrat John Morse, now the Senate majority leader. Jones had served two terms as a county commissioner before moving up to the state Senate from 2002 to 2006.
The announcement will at 10 a.m. Monday at the Colorado Springs Early Colleges, a local charter school headed by state Sen. Keith King, at 4935 N. Chestnut (also the Colorado Technical University campus) in the cafeteria.
Jones will be part of a busy Republican race in that primary, also including Colorado Board of Education member Peggy Littleton, David Williams, Patrick Carter and William Guevara, with Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera also rumored to be a possibility. The winner of that August primary will face Democratic state Rep. Michael Merrifield in the November general election.
