RR crossing restricted

Posted By on Wed, Jan 6, 2010 at 5:03 PM

Starting now, drivers should be aware that only passenger cars are allowed to cross the railroad tracks at Royer Street between Las Vegas Street and Fountain Boulevard southeast of downtown, the city advises in a press release. City crews installed new signs noting the restrictions, and police will begin enforcement immediately.

The crossing is a strange place where those turning north off Las Vegas have to go steeply up to the tracks. It was the site of a Dec. 15 train-tour bus collision in which the bus became high-centered across the tracks and was struck by a train. No one was injured.

The city's press release said making the crossing passable by all types of vehicles would require raising Las Vegas Street four feet, at an estimated cost of at least $1.5 million.
