Look out overhead

Posted By on Fri, Jan 8, 2010 at 4:08 PM

Springs-based NORAD launched two F-16 fighters at 11:44 a.m. today in response to reports of an unruly passenger aboard AirTran Flight 39 from Atlanta bound for San Francisco. The fighters arrived overhead of Colorado Springs Municipal Airport as the pilot of the commercial airliner landed the Boeing 737 there safely at approximately noon, where the plane was met by law enforcement.

It's the second time within a week NORAD has scrambled fighters in response to a reported problem on board a commercial aircraft. The other involved a plane bound for Hawaii that was escorted back to Portland on Wednesday after a passenger became "uncooperative."
