Texting for Haiti

Posted By on Wed, Jan 13, 2010 at 2:02 PM

If you're thinking about donating to Haitian earthquake relief, but like me, have a tendency to procrastinate on these things, here's a ridiculously easy way to get the job done: You can donate $10 to Red Cross relief for Haiti (as of this morning, the organization had committed a million dollars to the effort) simply by texting "HAITI" to 90999. You'll instantly get a confirmation request, you text back "YES," and $10 gets tacked on to your next phone bill.

The whole process took about 30 seconds.

Alternatively, you can text "YELE" to 501501, and a $5 donation will go to Yele Haiti, an organization set up by musician Wyclef Jean back in 2005. (Due to the response, the charity's server has crashed a couple times today, but the texting function is apparently working fine.)

Afterward, you can celebrate by checking out the brilliant Port-au-Prince band Boukman Eksperyans, whom I was fortunate enough to see give an amazing performance at Lafayette's Festival International de Louisiane:
