Say hello to Chief Shirk

Posted By on Wed, Feb 10, 2010 at 4:30 PM

Monument Police Chief Jake Shirk will officially announce he's in the race for El Paso County Sheriff on Friday. His candidacy was first reported by the Independent on Feb. 2, but Shirk wants to publicly proclaim he's a Republican candidate.

The announcement takes place at 11 a.m. on the steps of Pioneer's Museum, which is east of the courthouse and Sheriff's Office's downtown facility.

Shirk, 56, retired after 29 years with the Aurora Police Department and has served as Monument's police chief for five years. He says he's come up from the streets and never forgot the core mission of law enforcement.

"We need deputies on the street," he says. "I would be looking at all the programs in the Sheriff's Office to determine if they are critical needs or if we can put those deputies back on the street. I’m a street cop. I’ve been a street cop for 35 years. I’ve been in the heat of battle. I know what it’s like not to have cover by another officer. I know what it’s like to hear citizens cry in frustration, in pain, and anger because they can’t get a deputy out soon enough." He also proposes to find efficiencies by partnering with police departments.

Shirk is trying to unseat Sheriff Terry Maketa who first said he wouldn't see a third term but on Feb. 2 filed paperwork to run. Former 12-year deputy Todd Evans also is seeking the GOP nomination.
