Winter Games weather

Posted By on Mon, Feb 15, 2010 at 8:40 AM

Today in Vancouver, it's the coldest morning since I got here last Wednesday. And the temperature? Would you believe, about 38 degrees in some parts of the city? Certainly not typical for any Winter Olympics.

The forecast is for highs in the upper 40s with rain later in the day (what else is new?), but we've had some days into the 50s. That's typical for Vancouver, with its weather influenced so much by the Pacific Ocean.

But the good news is that with cooler nights ahead, the outlook two-plus hours north up at Whistler Mountain is much better for this week, with highs only in the 30s and lows more like 20. That's more conducive to snowmaking and grooming the slopes, which have been pelted by rain on many recent days.

This morning the Alpine ski events begin with the men's downhill, as Bode Miller tries for a medal. Tuesday will be the men's super-combined (downhill and giant slalom), followed by the women with their downhill Wednesday and super-combined Thursday. Lindsey Vonn of Vail has now had enough time off for her bruised right shin to heal sufficiently, and she should not be limited at all.
