Phil Allen, the valve trombone player from Tom Taylor’s Needlewood Orchestra, will debut Colorado Springs' latest big band ensemble this coming Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ancient Mariner.
Thin Air Jazz is a 12-piece outfit heavily inspired by Maynard Ferguson’s work after leaving Stan Kenton’s band. So expect plenty of high notes along with offerings from the Count Basie, Woody Herman and Buddy Rich repertoires.
This being the Springs, it’s not surprising that, in addition to Allen and Taylor, the band includes a number of current and former members of the USAFA’s Falconaires, so the level of musicianship is guaranteed to be impressive.
If you miss Sunday’s gig, you’ll get another chance to catch them — same time, same place — on March 21.
