Markey a key factor in upcoming House health care votes

There's an interesting blog today about the health care reform debate on the Fort Collins Coloradoan's Web site by that daily newspaper's editor, Bob Moore, who happens to be a longtime acquaintance. Bob grew up here and worked for the old Colorado Springs Sun before it was bought and closed in 1986 by Freedom Communications, parent company of the Gazette.

Anyway, Moore's blog, which you can read here, singles out first-term U.S. Rep. Betsy Markey from that part of Colorado as a key factor in the latest developments within Congress on the health care front.

Markey was one of 39 Democrats who voted against the House's original health care bill, which passed by only 220-215. She's being targeted now as one of the key swing votes as the House first considers the Senate version, then likely a later version through the reconciliation process.

Why so much attention for Markey? Because she's one of 16 Dems who, despite opposing the House's full health care bill, did also vote against the stringent anti-abortion language that Republicans inserted into it. The Senate's bill doesn't include the anti-abortion language, which should make it more amenable to Markey.

But the late GOP push, trying to incite constituents of legislators such as Markey, appears to be a clear attempt to scare her into another "no" vote, this time on the Senate version.

We know our dear congressman, Rep. Doug Lamborn, is a guaranteed "no" on any vote related to health care. So it makes sense to be watching more closely for lawmakers like Markey to see what they do in the days ahead.
