Bidlack becomes chair for local Dems

Two years ago, Hal Bidlack introduced himself to many local Democrats as the party's candidate to unseat U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn. (The Indy's first story about his candidacy is here.)

That effort was ultimately unsuccessful, but Bidlack, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel who turns 52 today, has just taken on a new role: He's now chair of the local party.

The former chair, Jason DeGroot, stepped down from his leadership post in February.

Bidlack, a longtime professor at the Air Force Academy who's currently teaching there part-time, will lead the party through a busy period, with caucuses occurring tomorrow, and the campaign season heating up toward the primary election in August and a general election in November. He will also, for the first time in the local party's history, run things with the help of an executive director.

Christy Le Lait, who was Bidlack's spokeswoman and deputy campaign manager in 2008, was hired March 5 by the party's executive committee. (Read a blog post about her here.)

As Colorado Springs makes national news for letting street lights go dark and looking to taxi drivers to help out the police department, Bidlack says, there's a good opportunity for local Democrats to convince the community that there is another way to run government.
