Target set to introduce recycling bins today

It’s not every day (well actually, ever) that this blog pays a compliment to the Target mega-chain, but the company’s plan to install recycling bins at all of its retail locations — starting today — suggests progress on the green business front.

According to a Reuters story posted this morning, the company expects the public to take advantage of a convenient opportunity to recycle its “plastic bags, beverage cans and bottles, mobile phones and MP3 players.” (I know I personally discard my mobile phone and MP3 player every time I visit the store, and always feel guilty about it afterward.)

Since some of these materials can then be sold, Target anticipates that the new program will end up paying for itself. Another economic and ecological advantage is that the same trucks making deliveries to the stores will pick up the recycled materials and bring them back to the company’s distribution centers.

If the program is successful, we can hope that other top chains like Wal-Mart and Costco will follow suit.
