Politics Down to the wire

In a news release issued this afternoon, Shirk noted he's been contacting the county's roughly 1,500 delegates and alternates to introduce himself, discuss his positions and earn their support. He calls the response "tremendous."
A former Aurora officer for 29 years who's served as Monument's chief for five years, Shirk is endorsed by police chiefs in the area, several mayors and and community leaders from across the county.
Shirk vows that if elected he'll never seek a tax increase and has developed a plan to increase deputies on street patrol by 20 percent during the first 18 months of his term without a budget increase. See more here.
Maketa's camp has predicted the two-termer will capture 80 percent of the delegates if not more, assuring him a third term, made possible by a voter-approved measure in 2006 that allowed the sheriff an additional term.
