Doc Holiday gunning for sheriff

Posted by Pam Zubeck on Wed, May 5, 2010 at 4:19 PM

Wearing a black cowboy hat and carrying a California private investigator license, John "Doc" Holiday strolled into our office this afternoon to say he's taking on El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa.

Holiday ... needs 750 signatures.
  • Holiday ... needs 750 signatures.

Holiday says he's in the process of gathering the 750 signatures of registered voters necessary to run as an unaffiliated candidate on the November general election ballot.

Meantime, Maketa is duking it out with Monument Police Chief Jake Shirk for the Republican nomination on the August primary ballot.

Holiday says he went through the Seattle police academy and worked as a campus cop at the University of Washington before coming to this area, where he went through the Springs Police academy before serving as an investigator with the District Attorney's Office. He's also been a bailiff for the District Court here.

A frequent critic of Maketa's over the last four years, Holiday especially opposed Maketa's use of a tent jail and limiting prisoners' outgoing mail to postcards. He says he has 56 issues on which he'll stake his candidacy, including working to enhance the safety of prisoners and staff, reducing the $100 charge for concealed weapons permits, and reviewing the policy on use of Tasers.

This guy was a rent a cop and wants to be our Sheriff? No way. This has got to be a joke, "Doc Holiday"? How can anyone take this guy seriously.
