I guess once you get used to the "prosperity" and "abundance" that modern evangelism seems to be all about these days, a more ascetic life kinda loses its charm.
Ted is so full of himself that he cares not New Life which he started. His rule, by the way, was if you were a staff person and leave his former church you were expected to move an hour away. He can not be trusted and I'm sure the church will be at least 500 to 1000 people within three years. He is going to compete with his old church.
