Romanoff's Backbone repair

Posted By on Mon, Jun 7, 2010 at 1:41 PM

UPDATE, 1:30 p.m.: Oddly enough, an hour after we posted our "Backbone Express" sighting at Butch's Automotive Service, we received an e-mail from the Romanoff campaign that started this way:

The Backbone Express made its maiden voyage last week. Our new (well, pretty used) campaign van is taking my team and me to more than 100 communities across the state over the next 10 weeks.

That's a heap of expectations for a used van that would up in the ER within five days of hitting the road. Concerned, we called the Romanoff campaign and got a quick callback from press secretary Roy Teicher.

Apparently, the van needed a tune-up and had a cylinder problem — "I think one of the cylinders is misfiring," Teicher says. "Does that sound like something a cylinder does?" — but he believes it will be out of Butch's by Tuesday morning, ready for its summer of road trips.

Teicher says he doesn't know how many miles are on the van. But when asked whether there's a backup Backbone, he laughed and said no.

"It's not like Air Force One."

Just last Thursday, the campaign van that Andrew Romanoff has dubbed "The Backbone Express" rested proudly outside Denver's Rise and Shine Biscuit Kitchen and Cafe.

How sad, then, that all weekend long, Backbone was marooned on a residential street in central Colorado Springs, apparently in need of some TLC.

Van trouble cant get Romanoff down.
  • Kirk Woundy
  • Car trouble: a badge of 'rest of us' authenticity?

At least the Democratic Senate candidate has good taste in mechanics. As more than one Indy writer has said, Butch is the best.
