With Great Danes comes great responsibilty

The film Marmaduke opened in theaters last Friday, and you can bet more than one kid has already begged, "Please Mommy, can't we get a puppy?" on the ride home.

Tyson, a six-year-old blue Great Dane, is just one of the many dogs the Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue currently has available for adoption.

For families wooed by the laid-back and playful nature of the Great Dane breed, there are a lot of considerations to make before bringing a new pup home.

Volunteers from the Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue were outside of a Springs movie theater on Saturday to raise awareness about what Great Danes are like and how big they can get. Most Danes can weigh anywhere from 100 to 180 pounds, and while they have fun, quirky personalities, aren't for every lifestyle. The dogs need to remain active and require a lot of room to roam.

The Rocky Mountain Great Dane Rescue currently has more than 25 Danes looking for new homes. As a nonprofit organization, it operates entirely on donations and with volunteers to care for the dogs as they wait to be adopted.

If you do decide to get a Marmaduke of your own, do your research — the American Kennel Club Web site is a great place to start — and make sure you understand the kind of commitment you're making. And if you really end up wanting to get one ... why not give a good home to a dog in need and adopt a rescue dog?
