'Over the River' impact to be announced

Posted By on Mon, Jul 12, 2010 at 2:05 PM

Beginning July 16, the Bureau of Land Management will release its Over the River Draft Environmental Impact Statement for public review. It will be available at blm.gov/co/st/en/fo/rgfo/planning/otr.html.

The "Over the River" project, proposed by world-renowned artists Christo and the late Jeanne-Claude, involves draping a series of fabric panels over 5.9 miles of the Arkansas River.

Like most of Christo and Jeanne-Claude's pieces, "Over the River" has garnered much controversy, ranging from concerns about the environmental impact to the fear that an influx of traffic will cause highway accidents and jams. Yet the duo is known for battling years for an installation, having successfully wrapped coastlines, government buildings and even a valley near Rifle ("Valley Curtain").

The BLM has announced a series of public meetings/hearings on the issue:
