Tread carefully, Pat Kelly

Posted By on Tue, Jul 20, 2010 at 4:00 PM

If you've worried at all about government malfeasance going unchecked by the local daily, fear not. At his "City Desk" blog, Gazette reporter Daniel Chacón has put up two posts that link one of our city officials to wild double-digit spending — not once, but twice, two months ago.

Both posts target city attorney Pat Kelly. The first one catches Kelly shamelessly OKing two employees to enroll in a $40 legislative webinar. She even goes so far as to say that she'd be interested in it, too, if only she had the time.

Hear that sound? Chacón hears it, too, and he knows just what it is: the crackling of taxpayer money going up in flames.

But that little fire becomes an inferno with his next post, which follows Kelly into a high-backed booth, almost surely hidden from the prying eyes of the public. What he finds there is almost breathtaking in its audacity.

She’s a good tipper — at least when she’s using her government-issued credit card.

According to Kelly’s credit card statement for May, Kelly paid $28.85 for lunch at MacKenzie’s Chop House downtown and gave a $5 tip, which is about 17 percent.

Surely $1.67 would have been sufficient.

Seventeen percent! Is she paying the waiter hush money or something? Surely, there's a bigger story there. Luckily, Colorado Springs will know just who to turn to when it breaks.
