Annie Leonard's new "Story"

Posted By on Wed, Jul 21, 2010 at 5:25 PM

Back in December, I interviewed filmmaker Annie Leonard, who was visiting Colorado College to talk about her film,The Story of Stuff, which since 2007 has attracted more than 12 million views.

Back then, Leonard was just about to release her second film,The Story of Cap & Trade. In March, she added The Story of Bottled Water to the list. Just today, she released The Story of Cosmetics.

Leonard's goal with all of her films is to get people talking about production and consumption, and the social and environmental consequences. Free Range Studio's simple line-drawn animations make it easy for the masses to digest often-lofty messages. They're not meant to be in-depth features; rather, Leonard's intent, as she and I discussed back in December, is to get people thinking, and interested enough to get out, learn more, and make change.

With The Story of Cosmetics, Leonard worked with the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, to address the "minefield of toxins" in her — and our — bathrooms. If you haven't already started eliminating parabens and such from your personal care products, you might want to set aside eight minutes and watch her video:

Once you've done that, visit the main Story of Stuff website to learn more about her work, as well as the upcoming The Story of Electronics.
