Postcard to the future

Posted By on Wed, Jul 21, 2010 at 11:00 AM

Dear posterity,

I'd like to instill in you, future reader, some nuggets of wisdom gleaned from my years back at the turn of the century.

Always have a good mechanic, and make sure he uses parts made for your model of car (or hovercraft or whatever).

Never go to the grocery store on a Saturday morning. Believe me, it'll ruin your day (unless of course you guys eat food intravenously, in which case I'm really, really jealous) ...

OK, I'm sure someone out there has something better to say to the generation one hundred years from now. And that's just what the Manitou Springs Public Library is looking for.

A time capsule, how cute of us!
  • "A time capsule, how cute of us!"

Here's the info:

“Letters to Posterity”, Phase II of the Time Capsule Campaign celebrating the Manitou Springs Public Library’s Centennial anniversary, will begin in July. One hundred “letters” written by the citizens of 2010 and addressed to the citizens of 2110, will be chosen and then placed in the 100-year time capsule.

Library patrons, residents of Manitou and Colorado Springs, and visitors to Manitou are welcome to participate by submitting a letter, essay, poem, or lyrics, or a pencil/ink sketch that can be scanned and then printed onto archival paper. Ten letters will be tentatively reserved for students from the Manitou Springs Public Schools and the library will also invite local, state, and national dignitaries to participate.

“Letters” may describe Manitou, the library, special events, or life in general as it is today or predictions of what Manitou, the library, or the world in general may be like in 2110.
Letters to be placed in the time capsule will be chosen based on content and creativity and will be announced during the Library’s annual Author Fest of the Rockies at the beginning of October.

The deadline to submit an entry is September 15th. Letters, essays, poems, and lyrics should be submitted electronically on our website at Letters to Posterity at www.manitousprings.colibraries.org. Pencil or pen sketches should be submitted directly to the library. Entries should be one page in length; sketches should be submitted on 11 x 8 ½ sized paper. Each entry should also include the name of the person, phone number, email address, and town of residency. For those without a computer or email address who wish to participate, contact the library for additional assistance.

P.S. Bonus points if you get to read your own letter when they crack this one open. With my family genes, I'll be the 3-foot-tall 124-year-old lady reading about mechanics and grocery stores.
