Downtown shopping excitement (really!)

Posted by Kirsten Akens on Thu, Aug 26, 2010 at 7:24 AM

It seems like it's been awhile since new stores have opened downtown, so I've been a bit giddy the past week eyeing storefronts.

First on the list: Republic of Paws, a boutique filled with products for the furries in your life. Republic of Paws is primarily a website, and the shop, which opened last Sunday at 129 N. Wahsatch Ave., reflects that. It's tiny, but packed with colorful toys, organic treats like Barkwheats, and carriers for dogs and cats.

While the shop doesn't carry everything on the website, owner Molly Smith says locals can choose to pick-up any online purchases from the store, thereby eliminating shipping costs. Drop by for a visit, and you're likely to walk out with some samples and a smile on your face.

My dog Lucy will love the treat, though probably not the shampoo sample.

Next up, Ellie K Boutique.

At the southwest corner of Tejon Street and Platte Avenue, in part of the former Soundshop Audio and Video space, Ellie K is, at this point, simply a sign with a cute bird logo and some construction workers blaring music out the door. But a Facebook page says the shop should open within three to four weeks, and photos feature women's clothes and accessories.

And not exactly new, but refreshed:

The Meininger Art Supply building at 201 S. Weber St., is showing off a bright new outfit of its own. In a definite improvement over the purple and green of old, each exterior wall features a different color. (And, take note, a sign in the window screams "Art Sale.")

We've gotten word of some new openings in Old Colorado City as well. As soon as I can get over there, I'll post an update.

Thanks for the info. I stopped by republic of paws and bought a new harness and lead for my lab. The owner was very friendly and helped me choose my options. Like most cs independent readers, I like to shop local. I would def recommend this store to my friends and any dog lover!
