Tesla: The Musical

As if summoned by the Insane Clown Posse's poignant question, "Fuckin' magnets how do they work?" Colorado Springs' own eccentric inventor, Nikola Tesla, is rising from the dead. At least in a cultural sense.

The turn-of-the-20th-century man behind the Tesla coil and other electromagnetic miracles is about to get his own opera, courtesy of Jim Jarmusch (Ghost Dog, Stranger than Paradise).

According to a Pitchfork interview, the project will be a collaboration between the musically inclined filmmaker and composer Phil Klein.

Jarmusch is also working on a documentary about Iggy & the Stooges. Fans of his Coffee and Cigarettes will remember Iggy Pop's appearance opposite Tom Waits, who frequently appears in the director's films.

As for who would play Tesla in the staged version, I'd nominate either Waits or Roberto Benigni, whose performances in Jarmusch's Down By Law were unforgettable. Here's a clip followed by an extra-special surprise:
