Salida lifts MMJ ban

Posted By on Mon, Sep 13, 2010 at 2:59 PM

Contrary to the towns, cities and counties — ahem, El Paso, ahem — attempting to rid themselves of that devil weed, Salida City Council voted not to extend a moratorium preventing centers from operating.

Councilor Jay Moore told The Mountain Mail, "It seems arrogant to take it upon ourselves to decide whether or not to ban dispensaries."

But it was a tight 4-3 vote, with a trio of Councilors, including Tom Yerkey, wanting to extend the moratorium.

The situation with medical marijuana in Salida is different than on the Front Range, Moore said, believing many residents who are users need the medicine for health reasons.

Yerkey differed and stated, "Many of my constituents believe medical marijuana dispensaries are a running front for legalizing marijuana."
