This weekend the Pikes Peak Arts Council awarded four locals MicroGrants, each one a $200 prize the council gives artists who apply on a monthly basis.

For September and October, PPAC awarded: Pat Musick (visual artist, writer), Kim Polomka (painter, muralist), Jim Sawatski (filmmaker) and Steve Wood (interdisciplinary artist).

Interestingly, both Musick and Sawatski talked to the Indy earlier this year about the history of art in Colorado Springs ("Rarified air," InSider 2010). Pat is the daughter of Archie Musick, a well-known artist whose murals adorn such locales as the Manitou Springs Post Office. Sawatski is in the process of creating a documentary on Colorado Springs artists.

An e-mail from PPAC president Jay Miller outlines each of the four artists current — and exciting — projects:

Pat Musick, visual artist and writer. Pat is working on a book that is based
on the many letters and documents left by her father, renowned local artist
Archie Musick.

Kim Polomka, painter and muralist. Kim is hoping to document existing murals
in the region and to see that new murals are created both by him and others.

Jim Sawatski, filmmaker. Jim is working on a film documenting historic
artists of the PIkes Peak Region.

Steve Wood, interdisciplinary artist. Steve is working to create something
special for 2011 ... (Steve is always working on something special!!! This
begs the question .. .for Steve is the normal special or is the special
normal? We'll find out, so stay tuned.). We look forward to the surprise.

Pat, Kim, Jim, and Steve ... thanks so much for being artists in our region.
Your work is invaluable to us. You can look forward to receiving your $200
MicroGrants in the next couple of days. Keep us informed of your progress.

Congratulations to these four artists. For more on MicroGrants, visit pikespeakartscouncil.org.
