The other day, I was enjoying an interior design show in an attempt to momentarily escape the 24-hour news cycle, which lately has been punctuated not by ads for laundry soap and kids' cereal, but by the political vitriol of campaign ads.
Perhaps, you've noticed.
Anyways, my attempt to take a time out was an utter failure. Two minutes into the show, it cut for commercial, and there it was: Some special interest group slamming U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet.
Ever since the Supreme Court declared that corporations should be allowed to bankroll elections, we in Colorado — one of the hard-fought "purple states" — have been subjected to more political advertising than anyone should be forced to stomach. It's not just TV. It's radio and print, too. My mailbox (the physical one) has been stuffed to the gills with political advertisements, most of which I simply grab by the handful and toss in the recycling bin.
Today, the New York Times takes notice of the situation. Times writer Timothy Egan says that Supreme Court Justice John Roberts should come to our state, and take a look at what his court's ruling has meant to Colorado this election season. (Way to go, Egan!)
