From the Denver Post:
After touring the Fort Lyon Correctional Facility and meeting with local officials Wednesday, Gov. John Hickenlooper said he would revisit his decision to close the prison, but he stopped short of promising a reversal.
Hickenlooper has proposed shutting the prison Aug. 31 to help close a nearly $1.1 billion budget shortfall. In the first full year after it is closed, the savings would be $6.3 million.
But this $6.3 million savings will destroy Bent County's economy ...
Mark MacDonnell, with the Bent County Development Foundation, said the area has struggled economically for decades, and a prison closure would make the situation even more dire.
"The number of children living in poverty in Bent County is approximately 37.6 percent, compared to the state's 15.7 percent," MacDonnell said. "That's staggering. That's Appalachian."
... which has to qualify us as living in a dystopian America. How are we ever going to get out of this vile, tax-subsidized business of warehousing "criminals" when whole local economies are based on it?
