Lance Green brings it home

  • A Lance Green original.

In 2008, the Indy wrote about Lance Green, a local artist whose Muses, Ladders and Storms at Sea show at Smokebrush Gallery opened a window into his tumultuous childhood and past.

Now, he's appearing in Manitou Springs with his Bringing It All Back Home exhibition at the Business of Art Center (where I'm a board member).

The show, which will feature 25 years of his acrylics, sculptures and ink drawings, opens next Friday, April 22, along with three other shows. We'll mention it in our 7 Days to Live section in next week's paper, but in the meantime, here are a few thoughts from Green:

• On studying with the renowned Fritz Scholder: “Everything changed. I’ve been in the studio every day since — about 15 years. I think it’s just been my fate.”

• On his self-destructive youth, which started in Denver and unfolded in California: “I think if I wasn’t making art I’d be a violent criminal or a drunk or something. It’s where my angst goes and turns into beauty, where my chaos becomes order — and love."

• On his primary influence, his mother: “She was the one that not only ‘got it’ but would have never spoken to me if I wouldn’t have pursued my art. She died really young — had a real hard life, and this is for her.”
