You pay with your credit card to charge the card up (I do $20 increments), then you slide the card into any Colorado Springs parking meter, and badda bing, your meter is plugged. When you're done, you slide your card back into the meter and to check out, which means you only pay for the time you actually park there.
It's cheap and it's easy. Brilliant.
So anyways, I'm totally excited that Manitou Springs is now adopting a similar program. Not only will the cards pay for your parking at lots near downtown Manitou, they'll pay for your parking at the Barr Trail lot, which is no longer free.

Parking SmartCards Now Available!
SmartCards are for sale in the Planning office in denominations of $25, $50, and $100.
These parking cards work almost like a credit card and can be used in the Smischny,
Canon, Wichita, and Barr Trail lot kiosks where parking is $1/hour.
The SmartCard is designed to supplement your Canon/Wichita (Lot A) parking permit since
Lot A permits cannot be used May 1-September 30. (Please note that this is not new for
2011. All information distributed to the public starting November 4, 2010 made it clear that
the Lot A Canon/Wichita permits could not be used during the “high” season and that those
permits would need to be supplemented.)
SmartCards will also work for parking in the newly-paved Barr Trail lot.
Current permit holders and anyone working and/or living in the Metro District area (most of
downtown) can buy the $50 and $100 cards for ½ off; $25 cards are $25 for everyone. A
refundable $15 deposit will also be collected for each card.
More parking information can also be found online at www.manitouspringsgov.com.
