The gulf is widening between Colorado Springs' mayoral candidates, according to a KVOR/Magellan Strategies poll released today.

Bach: Lead over Skorman growing.
  • Bach: Lead over Skorman growing.

The poll, conducted May 9 and 10, shows conservative Steve Bach with 54 percent of the vote, compared with former City Councilman Richard Skorman's 41 percent. The margin of error was 3.5 percentage points.

Despite Skorman's many years in the public spotlight as a councilman and U.S senator's aide and Bach's never having held public office, Bach registers 99 percent name recognition compared to Skorman's 98 percent.

The poll showed only 5 percent undecided.

While 45 percent had a favorable opinion of Skorman, 44 percent had an unfavorable opinion. In contrast, 56 percent had a favorable opinion of Bach, compared to 32 percent who said it was unfavorable.

In a poll conducted by Luce Research for the Independent, Bach led Skorman by 8 points with a margin of error of about 5 percentage points.

The City Clerk's Office reports that as of Wednesday, 69,602 ballots had been received out of 149,744 sent out.

The KVOR/Magellan poll also asked these questions about county elected official term limits:

In 2010, El Paso County Commissioners placed a “term limits” question on the
ballot. The ballot question asked voters to “limit the terms of county officials to
three terms.” The question wording did not state that voting yes would actually
increase the number of terms county officials could serve from the current two
terms to three terms.
T6. Knowing this, do you think the El Paso County Commissioners should place
another, more clearly defined term limits question on the ballot to give voters
a choice between limiting county officials to either two terms or three terms?
Should place another term limit question ...................... 69%
Should not place another term limit question .............. 24%
Undecided/Unsure ..................................................................... 7%

T7. And would you still support holding an election if you knew El Paso County would have to bear part of the cost? (Asked only to respondents who think that another term limit question should be put on the ballot)
Still support another election.............................................. 65%
Would not support another election ................................ 24%
Undecided/Unsure .................................................................. 11%

Question T7 in the poll stems from Clerk and Recorder Wayne Williams' concern that placing measures on the November ballot could cost the county $300,000, whereas if there are no county issues, the county will pay nothing and other taxpayer-supported agencies who do have candidates and measures on the ballot will pick up the tab.
