Charlie Brown brings his salvation show to Modbo tonight

While the roots and blues diaspora will definitely be blowing through town with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Buckwheat Zydeco show next Thursday, and Blues Under the Bridge the following Saturday, you can catch an interesting local variant this evening at Modbo.

I first saw Charlie Brown & the Great Gospel a few weeks ago, and was well impressed by the musician and his titular backing band — which is really just his steel guitar, suitcase kick-drum, tambourine and keening vocals. This is the kind of wailing, possessed-by-the-holy-spirit blues that comes across more dark and sincere, à la internationally known “Denver scene” graduates like 16 Horsepower and Woven Hand, than the more cartoonish southern gospel shtick that’s still in vogue in some parts of the indie-rock world.

The video posted below was taken at Brown's Zodiac show last month, but I gotta warn you that my iPhone wasn't recording very well that particularly evening. Better to go to Brown's website and download or stream his new debut album, The Priest for free — or donation, if the spirit so moves you.

Tonight's show is also free, with Brown going on around 9, followed by Mike Clark and his new project, Sugar Sounds. So get out there and raise some hell. Or heaven. Or, most likely, both.
