Recently, two gay Fort Carson soldiers and their friends were badly beaten by a group shouting homophobic slurs.
The men had just stopped to pick up some tacos when the alleged hate crime occurred.
If you haven't heard about the incident, that's because it hasn't received a lot of attention from local media or elected officials.
However, the gay community and the local Democratic Party are aiming to change that Tuesday. They're holding a rally at noon outside City Hall to ask elected officials to denounce the crimes, and to raise awareness.

Colorado Springs Citizens Call For Strong Community Response to Recent Hate Crimes Attacks
Colorado Springs - As the Colorado Springs City Council meets for a regularly-scheduled meeting, local citizens are asking Mayor Steve Bach and the city council to denounce the recent attack on two soldiers that appears to have been a hate crime. Several community members have drafted a resolution condemning the assault on two gay soldiers who were stopping for food on their way home.
"Hate has no place in our community, and we need our elected leaders to make that point loud and clear," said Kathleen Ricker, a long-time Colorado Springs resident and Chair of the El Paso County Democratic Party. "Several of us have drafted a resolution and hope that Mayor Bach and the council will show decisive leadership and deal with this issue. There should be no doubt that crimes against a group of people based on their identity have no place in our community."
Mayor Bach and City Council President Scott Hente must approve any resolution before it is considered by the full council. Residents are hoping that prompt approval of their resolution will allow the city council to pass it at their next meeting.
There will be a rally outside of City Hall at noon on Tuesday, July 12, 2011.
