Post mall eviction, Solar Roast opens drive-thru

Solar Roast Coffee, which we first reported on back in February 2008 here, will open a new drive-thru location tomorrow at 2800 N. Elizabeth St. in Pueblo.

Business co-founder Mike Hartkop says the drive-thru was originally slated to launch later in the year, but he and his brother David decided to bump up the schedule after getting booted from the Pueblo Mall — they say unfairly.

Check out David's recent letter to the editor of P.U.L.P. here, in which he explains how the mall forced them to vacate their location to accommodate a new national contract with the hat store Lids.

From that letter, here's his warning:

To local business owners: Please be warned that the Pueblo Mall is perhaps NOT a good location for local business. Your shop, no matter how successful, is subject to being instantly replaced by a national chain. There is no real protection from this and very little you can do about it afterward. We will miss our friends at the Pueblo Mall.

Solar Roast does still maintain a location on the CSU Pueblo campus in addition to its flagship downtown store.

Mike says the brothers are about six weeks away from installing solar panels on their downtown building, which will make the business 100 percent solar and carbon neutral upon completion.

Also, he says Helios 5, the next generation roaster being designed by David, remains in the works.
