The latest emailed missive from U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn:
During the last week, negotiators on a possible debt ceiling increase met repeatedly but failed to make substantial progress. It seems that negotiators for the Obama Administration and Senate Democrats insist on tax increases as a way to curb the deficit. House Republicans on the other hand, want spending cuts.
Unless, of course, we are talking about the military.
And especially if we are Lamborn talking to local military contractors, who happen to be his constituents, which is exactly what he is doing in this photo — which he included in the email calling for spending cuts.
It really demonstrates just how rarefied the military is in the minds of politicians.
Military spending, at whatever level for whatever "war," is regarded as an absolute good, while any level of spending whatsoever on food stamps is seen as an absolute evil. This is what Republicans try to sell us as fiscal responsibility.
But tell you something you didn't know, right?
I'm glad that Speaker Boehner is holding firm. There is absolutely no desire on the part of any House Republicans I know to raise tax rates and tax revenues. I do not believe the President's repeated references to relatively minor issues like corporate jet owners and hedge fund managers are helpful. This may appeal to class envy among some, but the dollar amounts involved will make almost no difference.
Entitlements need to be looked at and should be part of the negotiations. That's where the dollars are.
I personally have not seen anything I can even remotely support up until now. I truly hope we can pass a Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution next week when it comes up for a vote. It will take two-thirds, which means it needs a lot of Democrats, besides most or all of the Members from the Majority. One way or another, we need structural safeguards to change the way Washington does business.
