Memorial Health System has sent out a plea to the community for more blood donations, saying it is critically short, and that a major shooting could deplete supplies.

As you may remember, four people were shot and killed recently in a single night in Colorado Springs, so the problem would appear to be extremely urgent.

Our suggestion: Help your community. Get a free cookie. And give blood.

This from Memorial:

Memorial Health System is critically short of blood, and a bad shooting or
other serious trauma could deplete our supply. We need all blood types.

Community members can help at public blood drive today at 2:30 p.m. at the
East Branch of the Pikes Peak Library, 5550 N. Union.

Blood shortages are common in the summer nationally, but Memorial, which
operates the busiest emergency department in the state, uses higher amounts
of blood than many other hospitals. Without enough blood, we are forced to
seek out blood from vendors at premium prices. Worst-case, we would have to
cancel elective surgeries.
