Late last week, she released a statement to the media accusing the city, and specifically former boss and mayoral Chief of Staff Steve Cox, of financial misdeeds. She says that when she wouldn't "get on board" with the abuses, she was fired.
The accusations created a media feeding frenzy and led to Mayor Steve Bach saying he'd hire someone to investigate the claims. The Gazette editorial board, in particular, has been quite sympathetic to Velasquez's claims, and recently released a column applauding the mayor for his decision to investigate.
