"The Way It Is" was filmed during the recent Trinity International Hip-Hop Festival, an annual event in Hartford, Conn., that brings together artists from places like Zimbabwe, South Africa, Uganda and, oh yeah, Colorado Springs.
"It's like a family reunion," says Samir toward the end of the clip, "you know, with cats I never met before."

Nomadic Wax, World Hip Hop Market and The ReMINDers are proud to release the first ever music video shot during The Trinity International Hip Hop Festival. “The Way It Is” by husband-wife duo The ReMINDers was shot by festival co-founder Magee McIlvaine entirely during the 2011 festival at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut.
Trinity College alum McIlvaine (’06) is no stranger to music videos, having directed and produced more than a dozen videos for hip hop artists from Burkina Faso, Zimbabwe, Senegal, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Gabon and Uganda.
“The ReMINDers are perfect to represent the Trinity Festival,” said McIlvaine. “They are a global blend. Samir grew up in Belgium and Congo. Aja is from Queens, New York. The sing and rap in English and French. And every song has a positive message.”
The video features dozens of participants from the 2011 event: in concert, backstage and at the various workshops that took place on campus. The song’s theme is about recognizing and accepting the struggles of life — no matter the country, religion or economic class.

The ReMINDers video will be the first of a collection of Trinity festival videos on the festival’s new Vimeo channel at vimeo.com/channels/232964. The Vimeo channel and festival web site will continue to grow with video clips and other footage from the festivals stretching back to 2006.
Three other videos from the 2011 festival are being released in conjunction with the new Vimeo channel. The massive b-boy exhibition battle pitted Boston’s El Nino against Brazil’s Neguin in a rematch of the Red Bull BC One 2010 world championship. Also released was an electrifying live performance of “Na I Don (Come and Dance)” by Malian superstar Amkoullel , one of the high points of the concert. Finally, a live concert video of the ReMINDers’ song “The Way It Is” is also included.
The Trinity International Hip Hop Festival is the first and largest festival in the United States focusing on global hip hop culture. For six years, representatives from dozens of countries have gathered to share hip hop through concerts, films, lectures, exhibitions, panel discussions and workshops. The festival takes place every spring. More information on the festival can be found at trinityhiphop.com
The festival was the brainchild of McIlvaine and fellow alum Jason Azevedo ('08) and supported by the administration of Trinity College. Each year the festival is co-produced by some of the biggest names representing hip hop internationally: Nomadic Wax, World Hip Hop Market, the Temple of Hip Hop and Zulu Nation (local chapter 860).
