The row of food-related-but-not-cookbook-books at downtown's Poor Richard's Bookstore gets me every time. I've bought four-year's worth of the Best Food Writing anthology; Michael Ruhlman's multiple stabs at learning and translating chef-ery; Ruth Reichl's Garlic and Sapphires and on and on. (I'd tell you where the actual bookshelf is located, but not only can you figure it out yourself — or ask for help from the kick-ass staff — I don't want you to buy anything on it before I do.)
Of course, if you go and take a picture of the item you want, at the book or toy store, and do a little Facebook posting on the company's page, you may not need to buy it at all.
"Come on down to the Bookstore or the Toystore and take a picture or video of your favorite item (under $50)," reads the page. "Post your picture or video to our Poor Richard's Facebook page and tell everyone why you love this item so much; Get your friends to LIKE your post. Whoever has the most 'likes' on their item by midnight, November 11th, gets the item!"
Of course, Facebook's promotions guidelines strictly prohibit using "Facebook features or functionality, such as the Like button, as a voting mechanism for a promotion." But, hey — you have to break a few eggs to get stuff for free.
