Sometimes words just get in the way.
Showing 1-6 of 6
A lot of people are focusing on what the logo looks like or the tag line. Which leaves a bit to be desired.
I looked up the agency that created this branding, it appears they are located or possess a Denver phone number. A story I read touted them as local ... to Colorado I guess.
There are several projects over the years that are large scale, local bedrock organizations that have taken their advertising/marketing business out of town. I am wondering why they aren't being called out on it. A few I can think of are Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, Sky Sox rebranding, and now this. Even the Memorial Skatepark was outsourced to a Florida Company.
Maybe there is a story in the details.
why so many shots in Manitou??? that's right, that's where all the cool parts of the "city" are. Manitou IS NOT the springs.
I have mixed feelings about this one. Overall, I think I would grade it a 6 (on a scale of 1-10), or B-.
First, let's focus on the positive: 1.) Nice to see the local tourism bureau (in cooperation with others) spending a little money on a video / marketing campaign; 2.) Video does show a mix of age groups and ethnicities; 3.) Like that they interview a range of locals and not just have some voice-over and / or famous/self-important talking heads; and 4) good mix of video and stills; and 5.) the message is positive.
And now the negatives: 1.) Some of the music and the actual logo make this video seem like it is 20 yrs old...hardly innovative nor hip - while it may draw in some folks, not so sure about the 20-something / 30-something crowd; 2.) probably would have made sense to at least have an opener or closer from the mayor / city council (duh); some voice-over would probably be good to better tie it all together; 3.) should have highlighted a few of the innovative / unique businesses here; 4.) True, the great outdoors is what helps Colorado Springs stand out - however a vibrant city must have more that that. The Springs has some (but not all of this), yet very little of it was shown / talked about (special events / arts / architecture / history / facilities / universities / infrastructure).
For comparisons, see videos from Denver and Boulder:

I think that Boulder's is the best of the 3, with the exception of them focusing too much on those wine-sippers at the Flagstaff House (ugh).
At the end of the day, this is better than nothing, although it should have been better. This is a competitive thing, and for this City to become more dynamic and re-invent itself out of the ashes of this recession, it needs to be more serious about marketing itself.
OK. Trying to help and be part of the solution, here. Clearly, people don't seem to be liking this logo/tagline/branding. I know I don't. So how do we move forward from here?
This is a really interesting article to read. Some great insights for how they might scrap this and get something new and better. Just food for thought. Can't just linger in how bad this is and how much we all hate it.

This one put out recently by the Downtown Colorado Springs Partnership is better(except for the cheesy side camera angles, and lack of input from the "common folk.") A hybrid of something like this applied to the entire City, along with the "Live it Up video" would have resulted in a more effective video for marketing purposes.

The video is so terribly cheesy, smarmy even.
Our nation is sports-crazy, but they show NO shots of CC Tigers hockey or the full slate of USAF football and other sports that are AFFORDABLE to go see.
No views of the airport, Peterson AFB, Fort Carson?
No mention of our new hospitals. Why not? Much of the appeal is obviously aimed at the retiree class, who bring money but do NOT need jobs or schools, i.e., EASY money.
And that tee-shirted guy with a beard? Classy. Yeah, women are swooning I'm sure.
They should forego doing those ancient, "man in the street" clips, everyone knows those are totally scripted and not spontaneous. Just SHOW the city and do a voice over with one or two off-screen commentators or do a crawler at the bottom.
A waste of money.
