As we first reported was a possibility in July, the MMJ patient registry application fee was lowered today from $90 to $35 by the state of Colorado, confirms Westword. An e-mailed response from Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment spokesman Mark Salley says the effective date is Jan. 1.

The Denver altweekly also brings word of other news.

Meanwhile, William Breathes, who attended the meeting, reports that Ron Hyman, the Office of Vital Statistics and Medical Marijuana Registry's registrar and director, announced that "there are 3,200 applications currently on hold for some sort of restriction on the physician." Hyman added that patients whose applications are on hold won't be able to get answers about their status until after December 1.

Not too coincidentally, I've been copied on several e-mails from patients in Colorado Springs experiencing that "hold." (Only the first name is provided at the patient's request.)

On Oct. 31, the medical marijuana registry responded to Gordon's e-mail asking after the approval of his application with, "The Registry has received your application. It is currently delayed in the review process. Until the review is completed, we have no additional information to provide."

Gordon took this about as well as somebody waiting on approval to use their medication could, calling the response "completely unacceptable" on Nov. 7 and demanding more information.

Nine days later, the registry issued this response:

Thank you for following-up on your application. It is here at the Registry. Currently it is delayed in review for verification of your Physician Certification. The physician has been contacted. We anticipate resolution within the next few weeks. If you have not received your card or a letter from us by December 1, please contact us again at 303-692-2184 or by email at medical.marijuana@state.co.us.

The patient says his recommending doctor was Frank J. Wright, who has an exam clinic in Old Colorado City. Look for more details in next week's Independent.
