We're about a week away from Thanksgiving, and hundreds of local families may have to celebrate that day of bounty sans the bounty.

Area charities need lots and lots of turkeys.

On Monday, Springs Rescue Mission was 600 turkeys short of meeting its mark to provide meals to needy families, including hundreds at Fort Carson.

“Thank you to all of those who have responded to our appeal last week for Turkeys,” Bob Hughes, Chief Programs Officer at Springs Rescue Mission, stated. “We have received over 350 turkeys for our food boxes, but we still need over 600 by this Friday to provide about a thousand turkeys total to families by Thanksgiving.”

Meanwhile, the area's largest food bank, Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado, is hoping to score thousands of frozen birds at tomorrow's Take a Turkey to Work Day, with all birds going to local needy families.

More birds are also needed for the Marian House Soup Kitchen, which has only collected about 100 turkeys so far this season, and needs another 600 to fill gift boxes.

Here are your options for giving:

• Donate to the Springs Rescue Mission Warehouse, at 1 W. Las Vegas St., from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., today and tomorrow.

• Collect turkeys at your work tomorrow, then deliver them all that evening to one of the following Care and Share drop-off locations:

Chapel Hills: 8250 Razorback Road, Colorado Springs, 80920;
Eighth St.: 707 S Eighth St., Colorado Springs, 80905;
Palmer Park: 1575 Space Center Drive, Colorado Springs, 80915;
North Pueblo: 4200 Dillion Drive, Pueblo, 81008.

Volunteers will be at all four locations from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m.

• The Marian House Soup Kitchen will accept turkeys at 14 W. Bijou St., at the west end dock. Donations are taken Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The bulk of turkeys are needed by Tuesday to go in food boxes, though Marian House will accept turkeys after that date for the soup kitchen and rural food pantries.
