Republican Lois Landgraf, former Fountain councilwoman, announces today that she will be seeking the District 21 seat in the state House. The district lies south of the Springs, and includes the areas in and surrounding Fountain, Fort Carson and Security-Widefield.

This is essentially a new district, created after the lines were redrawn during the recent reapportionment process. Therefore, there's no incumbent to challenge. Rep. Bob Gardner, who represents the old HD 21, has been drawn into the new HD 20.

Whether or not Landgraf was going to be running has been a matter of some confusion over the past few weeks, due to her filing a candidate affidavit with the Secretary of State's office on Jan. 17, only to request to be withdrawn from the race a day later. On Jan. 24, she again filed an affidavit stating her intention to run.

You can review those documents here. Since that time, she has avoided stating publicly her intentions.

Today, though, they're clear. From her press statement:

“I am looking forward to the El Paso County Republican Assembly on Saturday, March 24, 2012 when I will seek the support of my Republican Peers to represent our District in the Colorado 69th General Assembly in January of 2013” Landgraf said “our state is facing many challenges but, the most significant and the one issue I will focus my campaign on is the almost 9% unemployment rate in Pikes Peak Region and for that matter Colorado. It is a travesty and our state and its leadership must work to make Colorado a more business and jobs friendly environment including eliminating job killing regulation.”

So it looks like El Paso County will be host to yet another primary, as last month Republican Albert Sweet, a relative newcomer, was the first to announce his candidacy for HD 21.
