As the Denver media is reporting, Rep. Mark Barker, the Republican freshman who represents House District 17 in Colorado Springs, suffered a mild stroke Tuesday.
According to media and sources, he is recovering nicely and is even expected to be back at the Legislature tomorrow.
Barker sits on the important House Judiciary Committee, which is slated to hear the controversial civil unions bill. Last year, that committee kept a similar bill from going to the floor, where it was expected to pass.
Barker is also being challenged in his district by Democrat Tony Exum, Sr., a retired fireman and former Colorado Springs City Council candidate.
In an interesting side note, the Denver Post reports that it was Barker's House colleague, Rep. Janak Joshi, who first became concerned with Barker's condition Tuesday and rushed him to the hospital. The Post's Lynn Bartels refers to Joshi as a doctor, which isn't exactly true. Joshi was a doctor up until Aug. 20, 2008, when he surrendered his license to practice medicine in the state. His license had been suspended the year before. You can see supporting documents here.
