Anderson supporters: Could Akin be Lamborn's BFF?

U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn, Republican, El Paso County, 5th Congressional District
  • U.S. Rep. Doug Lamborn

Missouri Rep. Todd Akin wowed the nation this week with his incredible ignorance of the human reproductive system. And while he may be a "nauseating slug of a human being," he is not alone.

Plenty of conservatives believe in his ill-informed "legitimate rape" theory.

While the Right struggles with how to deal with Akin, the Left has delighted in pointing out that Akin is far from an aberration among Republicans.

From the Huffington Post:

Lost in the national outrage and politics following an inflammatory statement made Sunday by GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin in Missouri is the reality that, on a fundamental level, there is no policy difference between Akin's comments and the mainstream GOP platform.

In a press release, supporters of independent congressional candidate Dave Anderson point out that his opponent, Rep. Doug Lamborn, has been a legislative ally of Akin:

Together, Congressmen Lamborn and Akin wrote legislation that would take away a rape survivor’s access to health services. They’ve blocked efforts that would provide care for female military personnel who have been raped. These two even co-sponsored a bill that would subject women to humiliating, invasive medical procedures.

Unfortunately, this is nothing new for Doug Lamborn. In fact, there’s very little difference between Lamborn and Todd Akin’s narrow world view towards the treatment of women.

Let’s just consider Doug Lamborn’s record when it comes to violence against women:

• He opposed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA — H.R. 4271)

• He opposed the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act (SaVE Act — H.R. 2016)

• He opposed the Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking Deterrence and Victim’s Support Act (H.R. 5575)

How can an elected representative — in good conscience — side with perpetrators of violent crimes rather than the victims of such crimes? It goes beyond comprehension.

We reached out to Lamborn's office for comment, and will update here if we hear back.

Just when we thought we heard it all….

The outrageous statement made by Representative Todd Akin last weekend about “legitimate rape” is troubling on so many levels. The arguments and tactics made by the likes of Akin are no longer about opposing abortion; it’s about control.

Politicians like Todd Akin and our very own Congressman, Doug Lamborn, declare their opposition to big government, yet their actions contradict their words.

Reps. Lamborn and Akin: A “Legitimate” Danger to Women’s Rights

That’s just wrong.

It also requires action.

We can put an end to this reckless representation and send someone to Congress that will look out for our interests. That person is Dave Anderson.

Dave is not a professional politician. Dave is, however, an accomplished businessman, husband, and father. He understands the needs, struggles and desires of the American family. He’s running on a platform that restores economic security for all Americans…giving us, our children, and future generations a chance at the American dream.

Dave is also running as an Independent. He’s not beholden to a party, but to a solution…a solution that breaks the gridlock in Congress and gets America working again. Dave is committed to sensible approaches to our growing deficit and reforming our complicated and sometimes unfair tax code. Dave will also never use women’s health as a political football to achieve desired political outcomes.

We believe women and all people of Colorado’s 5th Congressional District deserve better representation.

Will you help us defeat Doug Lamborn by electing Dave Anderson to Congress?

This is a grassroots campaign. It’s going to take volunteers. It’s also going to take money. The money we raise won’t match the hundreds of thousands of dollars Doug Lamborn accepts from special interests, but if we raise enough to get our message to the voters, we know we can win in the battle of ideas.

So let’s work to get Dave Anderson elected to Congress. Please sign up to volunteer to walk a precinct, make phone calls, or host a house party. Also, consider a contribution to the campaign! Whether it’s $100, $50 or $25, anything you can give helps.

Please go to our website and act now. Together we can win this!

Thank you for your support.
