  • Alignments for a high-speed rail line along the Front Range, as proposed by the Colorado Department of Transportation. The Black Forest route is now off the table.

Residents in the Black Forest area can sleep better tonight, knowing that the state has abandoned the idea of sending a high-speed rail line through that territory.

The idea had been boiling for a while, prompting residents to organize to oppose it. The Pikes Peak Area Council of Governments, a regional planning agency, joined in that opposition.

Though protests never reached a crescendo, the residents' voices were heard, and the Colorado Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that the Black Forest area is no longer under consideration in its feasibility study for a future high-speed rail line along the Front Range.

From a press release issued by El Paso County:

As a result of this decision, a public meeting at the Pinery, which had been scheduled by the El Paso County Public Services Department in coordination with the Black Forest Transportation Committee on September 25th, has been canceled.

In an open letter to the Black Forest Community, David Krutsinger, project manager for the feasibility study indicated that a revised non-freight rail corridor alignment would be defined and carried forward for further study. Krutsinger wrote, “CDOT will engage Pikes Peak area residents and elected officials in developing and considering ideas for a new alignment.”
