The Broadmoor names Bertrand Bouquin executive chef

To some extent, The Broadmoor is wisely pleading the fifth in regard to their latest big food and beverage-related announcement.

Yes, I'm making a heavy-handed pun here, because the announcement relates to the fifth executive chef in the resort's history, and an understandable omission of details that glosses over a brief interlude in which another chef was named for the spot.

  • Brienne Boortz
  • The right man for the job was under their noses all along. A big congrats to Bertrand Bouquin for becoming the true fifth.

Let's quickly review:

Earlier this year, longtime Broadmoor executive chef Sigi Eisenberger retired, and shortly thereafter, Derin Moore was named as his replacement. The fifth chef, as it were.

But shortly after that, the hotel and Moore parted ways due to "philosophical differences."

So if one wanted to be really precise, technically Bouquin could be called the sixth chef.

But really, should the property be haunted for years to come with a tiny stain on its résumé? A little blip next to the five stars and five diamonds signifying a hopeful hire that didn't work out?

Decide as you will, but I'd say no. They've played it right with their current PR, giving Bouquin the credit he deserves and we're thrilled to see the internal promotion of such a great chef.

A long, illustrious legacy need not be marred by a technicality.

But for our own, accurate archival purposes here at the Indy, I felt I owed our readers an explanation of us going along with Bouquin as the fifth chef — yes, we can count, and don't have that short-term of a collective memory.

So from here moving forward, the phrase "Derin who?" is a highly appropriate and functional phrase to be utilized at dinner parties and the like, when The Broadmoor's restaurants come up in conversation.

And if you're new to all of this talk, here's a copy of The Broadmoor's press release so you can scan Bouquin's fine career and get to know the new, true fifth chef.
