DIA currently ranks at No. 8 on a list of 50 airports in the Orbitz Thanksgiving Insider Index, a jump from last year's place at seven. Thus, there's a pretty good chance one of you readers out there will get the opportunity to see some of the artwork belonging to DIA's five new temporary exhibits now on display:
REMEMBERING OUR FALLEN
NOW — NOVEMBER 30
LOCATION: A CONCOURSE MEZZANINE
A very emotional exhibit, Remembering Our Fallen, is a stark reminder of the ultimate sacrifice made by over 90 Coloradoans killed in the line of duty while wearing our country’s uniform in a war zone. The photo display, which includes images of each of Colorado’s Fallen, is traveling throughout Colorado and is making a stop at DIA. The exhibit was created by Bill & Evonne Williams of Patriotic Productions, Omaha and is sponsored by Bellevue University. The project is endorsed by the American Legion of Colorado and the VFW of Colorado.
NOW — MARCH 2013
LOCATION: ANSBACHER HALL (WALKWAY FROM JEPPESEN TERMINAL TO A GATES SECURITY CHECKPOINT)
Handmade Colorado gathers creative talent from across the state to celebrate craft-centric mediums. The exhibition includes artists using traditional techniques in innovative ways. The burgeoning do-it-yourself culture is represented by these makers and, at the same time, these beautiful crafts are a vibrant facet of the economy. Whether they draw, print, sew, felt, knit, stitch, spin, fire, reclaim, cast, carve, hammer, remake, form or adorn, the artisans featured here offer unique, refreshing wares that are personal and timely. Visit www.handmadecolorado.org for more information.
NOW — MARCH 2013
LOCATION: DIA ART GALLERY (JEPPESEN TERMINAL, LEVEL 5 WEST)
The Center for Fine Art Photography, in collaboration with the Denver International Airport Art & Culture Program, present selections from Center Forward, an exhibition on the diversity and complexity of imagery that is currently being produced in photography around the world.
ANNUAL DIA EMPLOYEE EXHIBITION
NOW — FEBRUARY 2013
LOCATION: AIRPORT OFFICE BUILDING LOBBY, NEAR A GATES SECURITY CHECKPOINT
The second-annual DIA Employee Exhibition showcases the hidden talents of array of airport team members. Stop by this exhibit on your way to the A gates security checkpoint and peruse a diverse selection of mediums, artistic concepts and talent
JET SET: AN EXPLORATION OF MOVABLE ART
NOW — JANUARY 2013
LOCATION: COMMUNITY CASE GALLERY (JEPPESEN TERMINAL, LEVEL 5 EAST, NEAR BAGGAGE CLAIM 9)
eBags and Super Ordinary Gallery, in collaboration with the DIA Art and Culture Program, present JET SET: An Exploration of Movable Art, featuring original works by 12 Colorado-based artists. The style and subject matter in this exhibition vary dramatically, yet all of the pieces share one common element: they employ the eBags EXO Hardside Spinner Carry-On suitcase as their canvas. For more information visit http://blog.ebags.com/post/ebagsjetset/.
These shows are organized by DIA's Art and Culture Program and are funded through the City and County of Denver's "one percent for art" requirement for public facilities.
This is a nice extra for such a huge operation to undertake, especially given, as the press release adds, that DIA is the nation's fifth-busiest airport (the 11th in the world) and is the "primary economic engine of the state of Colorado, generating more than $22 billion for the region annually."
