Waldo Canyon fire

You can find broken cups and other relics found amid the Mountain Shadows devastation from the Waldo Canyon Fire at the Starbucks at 6896 Centennial Blvd.

So it was a fitting place for Mayor Steve Bach to present a Spirit of the Springs Award to Col. Martin France yesterday for helping with the recovery.

France organized more than 250 Air Force Academy cadets to lend a hand to neighbors who needed to mitigate the area around their homes after the fire in Mountain Shadows and around Blodgett Peak. They worked on about 200 homes and removed 86 tons of fuel from the neighborhood, according to a city news release.

The Waldo fire destroyed 345 homes and killed two people.

Bach also presented a Spirit of the Springs Award to Katie Boswell for making Starbucks "a second home and place of business for Mountain Shadows residents following the Waldo Canyon Fire," the news release said.
