Among other ideas, the study suggested closing Wasson High School, leaving the city's largest school district with four mainstream high schools, and closing Mann Middle School.
The schools could simply close, or they could be repurposed in several ways. For instance, the Wasson building could be used as the new home of the innovative science-based Galileo Middle School, which would be expanded to include grades 6-12. Or, a closed Wasson could become a large middle school, housing both Mann and Galileo students.
Other scenarios are proposed that could lead to closures or consolidations for elementary schools, as well as changes at Holmes and West Middle Schools. For a list of the working committee's ideas go here. To check out all the documents related to utilization, go here.
Currently, D-11 is welcoming parents, local residents and business owners to attend community meetings to discuss the suggestions. Meetings are scheduled starting tonight through Dec. 19 at various locations. Click here for the full schedule.
The Board of Education will consider changes as early as January.
