Now's the time to comment on school closures

Posted By on Mon, Jan 14, 2013 at 4:39 PM

Love Wasson? Crazy about Bates or Lincoln?

Colorado Springs School District 11 is having meetings to take public input on proposed school closures, but time is running out. The final meetings are today, tomorrow and Wednesday.

The meetings are in response to a move by the D-11 Board of Education, which has selected several recommendations from its recent School Optimization Utilization Plan for further review. The board will consider closing Wasson High School and two elementary schools, as well as other changes, at its Jan. 23 meeting. It will vote on the issue on Feb. 6.

The proposals now being considered are:

• Close Wasson High School.

• Open an “Early College, Career, and Alternative Education Center” at Wasson, and move Tesla, Bijou, Night School, Digital, Achieve K-12, Homebound and Home School Adult and Family Education and Career Pathway programs (including Auto, Hospitality, Medical, and ProStart) to the building.

• Redraw boundaries for Monroe Elementary.

• Close Bates and Lincoln elementary schools; move students to Jackson, Edison, Audubon, and Fremont elementary schools.
