You know the old phrase: "The more things change, the more they stay the same."
That might be an apt description of the latest reassignment at City Hall.
After City Council complained bitterly about the lack of sufficient and reliable legal counsel at the Jan. 22 Council meeting, Mayor Steve Bach said he was willing to provide Council members with more access to legal work.
City Attorney Chris Melcher, hired by Bach, is supposed to represent Bach and Council.
As of a few days ago, deputy city attorney Wynetta Massey was assigned as the "City Council Attorney," according to Councilor Bernie Herpin.
"I believe she has the integrity to give Council unbiased advice," Herpin writes in an e-mail. "However, should we really get into a situation where the City Attorney (Melcher) gives us advice on an issue that Ms. Massey disagrees with, I don't know what would happen. At this point, I am comfortable with Wynetta as our legal advisor."
Council meets Monday and Tuesday, so expect to see Massey take the city attorney's chair.
